The Central Ranges is a diverse and exciting wine zone located in the Central West of New South Wales, situated on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. This region is home to three formally recognized wine regions: Orange, Mudgee**, and Cowra. The diverse terrain, which includes the high-altitude vineyards of Orange (often exceeding 600 meters above sea level) and the warmer, flatter areas of Cowra, allows for a wide range of wine styles. While the zone is well-regarded for its Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is particularly known for producing high-quality cool-climate wines, including exceptional Chardonnay and aromatic whites. The mix of historic vineyards and innovative new producers has made the Central Ranges a destination for wine lovers seeking both classic Australian varieties and exciting, new styles.
Mudgee District Wineries
Named from the Wiradjuri word meaning “nest in the hills”, Mudgee is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, dating back to the mid-1800s. Set in a valley embraced by rolling hills, it offers sweeping vistas, historic charm and a strong red wine legacy – particularly cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot. Riesling and chardonnay also shine here, shaped by the region’s high altitudes and long, warm growing season. With free-draining soils and a climate marked by cold winters and dry summers, Mudgee produces bold, character-filled wines in a truly breathtaking setting.

The Cowra wine region, planted in 1973, is the hidden gem of the Central Ranges, known for its warm days, cool nights and ideal ripening conditions. Home to more than forty vineyards, Cowra produces standout wines, particularly its sophisticated chardonnay and vibrant, spice-laced shiraz. Nestled in valleys shaped by the Lachlan and Belubula rivers, the region enjoys a dry, continental climate and diverse soils that enhance wine character. Beyond the vines, Cowra offers warm country hospitality, rich history and natural beauty – making it a rewarding destination for wine lovers and curious travellers alike.
