One Vine Many Hands

After seven generations of Australian family history and three generations of winemaking, the seminal Stein family have a new successor. After working nationally and in some of the world’s premier wine regions – including Germany’s Rheinhessen and Rheingau – Jacob Stein, along with his wife Gina, have officially taken the helm at Robert Stein Winery. His time abroad, especially in the heartlands of European riesling, deepened his commitment to this expressive and multifaceted variety, readying him for this all important role.

Now, with the winery officially passed down, its rieslings continue to earn accolades. The Robert Stein Dry Riesling has twice won the trophy for Best Riesling at the Sydney Royal Wine Show and picked up multiple awards at the International Riesling Challenge. The Half Dry and Reserve Rieslings have also built impressive reputations, aging gracefully in cellars across the country.

As Johann, the first Stein to settle in Australia, stood aboard the ship Kinnear with his wife, bringing with them the first riesling cuttings to Australia, he couldn’t have imagined the legacy he was planting on foreign soil. But the moment marked more than a voyage – it was the quiet beginning of a remarkable Australian riesling legacy. Now, in the safe and experienced hands of his descendant.
