Burnbrae Vineyard and Cellar Door
Burnbrae Vineyard and Cellar Door
Burnbrae is perched in the picturesque Mudgee region, located along Hill End Road, down a driveway lined with Little Gem magnolias. The name “Burnbrae” is derived from Celtic language, meaning “the field slowing down to a stream” which perfectly encapsulates its stunning location. Known for its historic peppercorn trees, gorgeous views of the vineyard, and welcoming cellar door team, Burnbrae is a must-see for travellers and locals alike.
As one of the oldest vineyards in the region, Burnbrae has had many owners over the years. It was first owned by John Newman, who was the first of his family to come to Australia. He left the property to his son, who sold it after he left to fight in World War 1. The property passed through a few hands before being bought by the Turisse family, who planted the first grapes in 1968, beginning its history as a vineyard and winery. Wine production for personal use began six years later, with table grapes and wine grapes sold to the Sydney markets and at the farm gate. During this time, the old dance hall at Sally’s flat was moved to Burnbrae and transformed into the cellar door.
In 2004, Burnbrae was bought by Tony and Jill Byrant who immediately saw the potential in the vineyard. They passed the reins to Tony’s daughter, Trine, and her partner Andy in 2014. Just last year in 2024, Trine was talking to the neighbours Chris and Carm Robson across the road, who have been on vines for seventeen years, saying that they’d made the decision to place Burnbrae on the market. There was no need to, as Chris and Carm embraced the place with open arms and enthusiasm, taking it on as their own in March this year. They’re passionate about wine and their older vintages, as well as some new varietals, bringing a fresh but respectful touch to this old vineyard and cellar door. Chris and Carm are motivated by making wine to enjoy with friends and long lunch outdoors – an idea which has grown the charming vineyard, historical cellar door and boutique accommodation into what it is today.
Burnbrae invites you to taste your way through its range of wines and create some banter with the team while doing it. The winery offers something for every palate, regardless if you are a white wine, sweet wine or red wine lover. They even cater to non-wine drinkers, with beers available to keep you occupied. Enjoy an antipasto platter with friends, homemade using local, fresh produce, perfect for a quiet lunch. On Fridays and weekends, Burnbrae hosts Lazy Afternoon Pizzas, offering the perfect setting to enjoy wine with friends over a casual meal on the beautiful lawns. Every third Sunday, visitors are also spoilt with live music
