Briar Ridge

Briar Ridge has the largest family owned holdings of vineyards in the beautiful Mount View region, with its vines providing fruit of outstanding quality and unique character. Great wine is the result of great vineyards, and at Briar Ridge, its location comprises of rich red volcanic soil, shale, and limestone. Producing 9,500 dozen wines annually, the vineyard specialises in semillon, albarino, fiano, chardonnay, shiraz and tempranillo, and has been consistently voted a Halliday Five Star Winery, most recently winning the 2024 Halliday Chardonnay Challenge for the Best Chardonnay in Australia.

Its vineyard sites are elevated higher than other Hunter Valley wineries, which enables gradual growth in the cooler climate. Briar Ridge continues to offer a great taste of the Hunter Valley and its most famed varieties, as well as an innovative take on emerging grape styles. Enjoy a variety of tastings and be guided through the range by the friendly and informed staff. Relax indoors in the ‘old winery’ building, or on the Wine Deck, admiring the country gardens.

Briar Ridge Vineyard is a little slice of winemaking paradise reminiscent of the wine growing regions of France. The terroir, the microclimate and the views are unique to the rest of the Hunter Valley, setting it apart and making visiting here something unique and special.

At Briar Ridge, the wines’ foundations are firmly set in tradition, with vines established in 1972. However, the innovation comes through experimentation with alternative varieties and a hybrid of modern technologies, historical references and minimal intervention.

Briar Ridge is a Halliday Red Star Winery, a coveted rating that is awarded to outstanding wineries regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity. Its wines range from Hunter classics in the premium Single Vineyard and Stockhausen ranges to the contemporary innovations of the Limited Release and Varietal ranges with something that will appeal to every palate.

The winery is off the beaten path in a way that makes people feel like they’ve discovered something new on the fringe of the region. Mount View is a surprise Eden with a gentle elevation taking you to a secluded cellar door encircled by an impressive tree line. In fact, it’s so different up here that wine writer James Halliday once admitted that “if we were in Europe, Briar Ridge would have its own GI,” as it’s so different in aspect, soil, and climate.
